A Taxonomic revision of Australian Melobasis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)Staff: Brian Levey
The genus Melobasis is one of the largest Australian genera of Buprestidae containing around 200 species, of which about 80 species are undescribed. The genus was last revised about 80 years ago, and since that time only a few isolated descriptions of new species have been produced. At present it is impossible to identify the members of this genus with any certainty.
The main output will be a series of taxonomic papers revising the Australian species of the genus, with illustrated keys to enable the identification of the species, descriptions of the new species and colour images of all the species. Keys to the species have been done and the introductory text is complete; about a third of the species have been imaged and around a quarter of the descriptions have been done. It is hoped that the first paper will be submitted for publication in 2008.
The main aim of the project is to allow the accurate identification of the Australian species of this large genus of wood-boring beetles.
