Mid Jurassic ammonite faunas from Iran

Staff: J.C.W. Cope

Ammonites have been well-studied from all over the world, and we have extensive knowledge of their taxonomy and stratigraphical distribution. Nevertheless, there remain some areas from which they have not yet been described and studied in any detail, including Iran, from which faunas of mid Jurassic age have recently become available. Since ammonites are some of the most sensitive stratigraphical indicators known from the fossil record, this material has the potential to both correlate in detail the Iranian rocks in which they occur, and to provide further information on distribution patterns of individual species.
