The Lower Palaeozoic of the Gondwanan margin of southern Turkey

Staff: W. T. Dean [with O. Monod, Université d'Orleans, France]

An extended programme of research on the Lower Palaeozoic palaeontology, stratigraphy and palaeogeography of Asia Minor, in particular of south-eastern Turkey and in the Taurides, was begun in the early 1970s and is continuing. A wealth of new information, in particular on the trilobite faunas, has resulted, and has demonstrated close relationships between faunas of different ages with those of such Peri-Gondwanan terranes as NW Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Bohemia, as well as with south China. This work has contributed significantly to our knowledge of the palaeogeography and faunal distribution of these terranes.
