Collections management

Curator: Carolyn Charles BA

The Department of Industry's collections comprise three-dimensional objects, documents, photographs, books, works of art, film and sound recordings and consists of approximately 297,700 items. The core responsibility for the two collections management staff, based at the Collections Centre, Nantgarw, is to maintain the Museum's accountability for its collections as they enter the Department via the National Slate Museum Llanberis, Big Pit National Coal Museum, National Waterfront Museum Swansea as well as those collections entering via the Collections Centre. Their main duties can, therefore, be summarised as, maintaining legal ownership of potential acquisitions, the accessioning of newly acquired objects into the Department, the re-documenting of the collections, the maintenance of location records and the administering of the Department's inward and outward loans.

In 1996 the Department of Industry began computerising its collection documentation and, with the assistance of a CMS Assistant, to date there are over 76,000 Department of Industry records on the Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales' Collections Management System.

The Department is also computerising its photographic reference collection and now has over 50,000 records on an access database.
