Prints and Drawings National Museum Cardiff

From Rembrandt to Gwen John, Turner to Lucian Freud, Cézanne to Graham Sutherland — the works on paper collection is rich and diverse.

With around 30,000 individual works, it covers a broad range of European graphic art and is particularly strong in British and Welsh art.

The collection varies from exhibited masterpieces to preliminary sketches, as well as sketchbooks and albums.

The print collection ranges from early engravings to portfolios by contemporary artists, as well as Welsh topographical and portrait prints.

We also have photographs, from 19th century prints to contemporary portraits.

All works on paper are vulnerable to temperature, humidity and light. They are therefore displayed under controlled conditions for limited periods.

Look out for our changing displays throughout the galleries. You can also see works by making an appointment at the Prints and Drawings Study Room. We welcome individual and group visits.

There is no better way to understanding an artist than through the immediacy of their sketches and drawings.

We are still working towards getting a collection catalogue on-line, but please contact us with any collection questions or to make an appointment on 02920 573232 or email Prints & Drawings.
