Dark and Light

National Waterfront Museum

Take part in some fun learning with professional science rapper Jon Chase. Join in with activities and simple investigations to understand light and shadows.

Use our object handling box to investigate a variety of light sources used in the past and discover what life was like before electricity.

Use our dark and light themed Explorer Boxes to investigate the museum galleries.

From laver bread to cockles and crabs, children will learn about food fished in Welsh waters.

Explore a range of toys from the Victorian toy box and discover how different forces and mechanisms create movement.

Make a moving toy to take back to class.

Use a trail to look at the Museum’s new collection of moving toys. Play, investigate, learn and have lots and lots of fun.

National Waterfront Museum

Travel back in time to meet Mr Trevithick, the man who invented the first locomotive. Participate in this lively presentation and use problem solving skills to help him overcome his engineering difficulties.

Hear the inspiring story of the first man to design and build an aeroplane in Wales.

Use our hands-on Transport Explorer Boxes or booklet to investigate the vehicles in the galleries.

Welsh Pirates- FP

National Waterfront Museum

Meet our friendly pirate actor character and be enthralled by the drama of the high seas. Use your imagination as you hear about the exploits and daring raids of one of Wales’ most famous and notorious pirates - Barti Ddu.

Delve into a treasure chest full of pirate-themed activities.

Do you like writing stories? Come and learn about the real and fascinating story behind the Museum’s red monoplane and let it inspire you to write your own. 

Local author and illustrator, Thomas Docherty, will be on hand to explain how fact can be the perfect starting point to head off on your very own imaginative journey.
