A sailor's life for me

A character actor as a sea captain with handling objects.

Inspired by a character actor, artefacts and your own imagination, explore what life was like on board ship in the age of sail. Handle a range of artefacts from ships’ biscuits to the luxuries of the captain’s table. Hear about weevils, scurvy and the lash!

Learn about the different parts of a ship and the jobs done by sailors, through the Museum’s model.

Follow the footsteps of Mr Rosser around his district of Swansea on the day of the 1851 Census. Meet a number of people from different backgrounds.

Interrogate a wide range of objects associated with the different characters and piece together what life was like in the 19th century for rich and poor, men and women.
