Teacher Training News
Courses and workshops are now scheduled for the Spring and summer terms.
The General teaching Council for Wales is continuing with the Professional Development Bursary — up to £600 to be spent on a professional development activity. This has been used by teachers to pay for training with us and can be allocated to cover the costs of training courses and workshops and also supply cover and travel expenses.
The amount of bursary that can be allocated to Supply cover costs has increased to £145 per day.
You can allocate up to £50 of the grant to purchase software you may need and this can be augmented from school funds.
You can apply once in a financial year but this application can include several courses that progress over the year. This progression is reflected in our course structure of Introduction through advanced to specialist workshops. This also makes the courses ideal for less proficient users as well as more advanced.
For details of how to apply for a bursary visit the GTCW web site Here where you can also download an application form.
For developing ICT skills there is no proven substitute for hands on instructor led training where you are free to ask as many questions as you like and try new techniques and a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Away from the school you can focus entirely on deveolping your own skills and knowledge. There is also benefit in collaborating and sharing good practice with colleagues from other schools. And all courses offer free post course support.
Check the calendar for course dates, remember if the date is not convenient more courses are added throughout the year so register your interest straight away.
Digital Media Workshops
This popular workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by the teachers who attended it. From feedback evaluation it emerged that an option for a longer course is desirable. To accommodate this a 2 day version of the course is available which gives more time for practical activities with digital cameras and scanners and also with processing the images using various software packages. It also enables more time for tuition in composition and light management from museum professional photographers. The museum of Welsh Life, site where the activities are practiced, is proving an excellent and versatile resource.
The Photo shop Elements course is a good progression after the workshops.
This new workshop explores the use of digital video cameras in the classroom and school context generally. The course provides a range of practical activities and advice for successful video capture and editing of film and animation sequences.
Set over two or three days at the Museum of Welsh Life site. You will learn the principles of successful sound and picture capture indoors and outside with invaluable tips. The captured video will then be edited using video editing software and then output to DVD and CD with experience of preparing for web delivery; for school prospectuses for example.
There is also advice on recording school performances such as School plays successfully, and then distributing to children and parents.
This course looks at the principles and curriculum context of animation. A variety of animation capture techniques and software manipulation are explored. You will practice techniques for creating content using digital video cameras and editing software and explore the use of still images, music and in multimedia animation projects. Details of special pricing for software for teachers can be found at Pugh Computers
Full Details of the digital media, animation and video workshops can be found by following the links at the left of the screen.
Free Instructional Software
The new software section includes free instructional flash movies for reinforcement of application skills in Office applications. Children can click a link that will provide an on screen demonstration of common tasks such as saving a document or inserting a picture in Word . They are provided as Flash movies so take up little memory, and the computer does not need to be connected to the internet.
These will be updated with new content through the school year, to be notified of new releases why not register using the link? You will quickly build up a comprehensive bank of differentiated resources and it's all free. If you register you can also request specific tasks that may be of particular use in your teaching. Smartboard Software v 9 Update
If you use a smartboard the software upgrade is worth downloading. At last they are starting to offer really useful resources and features. A long awaited one is the ability to move the tool bar to the bottom of the screen so that smaller children (and teachers!) can easily access the commands.
