The Remains of the Palace of Philippe le Bel

HOLLAND, James (1799 - 1870)

[image: The Remains of the Palace of Philippe le Bel]

Date: 1835

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 54.9 x 34.8 cm

Acquired: 1898; Bequest; James Pyke Thompson

Accession Number: NMW A 470

Holland specialised in architectural subjects and made numerous sketching trips to the Continent. This painting is probably identical with a picture exhibited at the British Institution in 1835. Philip IV 'the Fair' (1268-1314) was the French King who dissolved the Templers, seized Pope Boniface VIII, and initiated the Avignon Papacy. The ornate staircase tower in this picture considerably post-dates Philip IV, being late fifteenth-century in style.
