Abergavenny medieval coin hoard

A hoard of 199 silver pennies was found by metal detecting near Abergavenny and acquired through the Treasure process. The coins are of the Saxon king Edward the Confessor (1042-66) and the Norman William I (the Conqueror, 1066-87). A detailed catalogue will be prepared and published. As well as reflecting the early post-conquest Norman presence in Gwent the hoard sheds new light on the late Anglo-Saxon coinage from western mints.
