Abergavenny medieval coin hoard
Staff: Edward BeslyA hoard of 199 silver pennies was found by metal detecting near Abergavenny and acquired through the Treasure process. The coins are of the Saxon king Edward the Confessor (1042-66) and the Norman William I (the Conqueror, 1066-87). A detailed catalogue will be prepared and published. As well as reflecting the early post-conquest Norman presence in Gwent the hoard sheds new light on the late Anglo-Saxon coinage from western mints.
