Welsh Whitebeam - Sorbus cambrensis - First found in 1874 and classed as Grey-leaved Whitebeam, biochemical studies have recently shown this to be a new species.
The tree genus Sorbus in the British Isles includes about 25 species and hybrids. Many species are rare and endemic (four endemic to Wales), having evolved recently. The project in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Bristol University, Exeter University and other botanists aims to revise the taxonomy of the species, provide information on their ecology and reproductive biology and their evolution.
