Vegetation History
The main focus of the Vegetation History Section is the investigation of the fossil record of plant life. This allows us to improve our understanding of plant phylogeny and of past environmental change. The two main areas of this investigation reflect the compositional balance of the Welsh plant fossil record: Quaternary palynology, including arctic-alpine and temperate habitats; and Late Carboniferous macrofloras. However, in both cases the work is not restricted to Wales, and emphasis is given to international collaboration.
In addition, the Section undertakes research into the history of the use of illustrations in botany and palaeobotany, with special emphasis on the 18th and early 19th centuries. This is to complement the extensive collection of illustrations that the Department has built-up over the years.
