How do you get to school?

Look at how your class travels to school. Ask your friends how they travel to school. Use SCAN's survey (Walking & Cycling) to help you then e-mail your results to the SCAN website.

Make graphs from some of the questions in the survey. CYCLE OR WALK TO SCHOOL IF YOU CAN

If you can't take a bus - and if you can't do that then car share with your neighbours. Why ? It saves money. You'll be healthier. You won't waste time in traffic jams. There will be less pollution in the city - less children will suffer from breathing difficulties like asthma.

As a class create a questionnaire that records:

• How all pupils get to school.
• If they think they could get to school in a way that creates less pollution i.e., car sharing, on a bus, cycling or take part in a "Walking" bus initiative.
• Any factors that may be preventing them from getting to school in a more environmentally friendly way. For example, a pupil may not be able to cycle to school because there are no safe roads on which to travel.
• Using a photocopied map of your area plot out where pupils live - using symbols or colored dots to indicate how they get to school.
• Ask your pupils to write a letter to their parents asking if they will co-operate in your project stating all the benefits.
• Once you have plotted your map you will be able to suggest alternatives to some of the pupils within your school.
• If you find that there are any problems such as no safe cycle or walking routes to school then e-mail the SCAN Officer who will be happy to discuss solutions with you and your class. Ask your local Agenda 21 Officer for help in planning "Safe Cycle Routes" to your school.
