Artist Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) was influenced profoundly by the locations in which he worked and during the 1930s he developed a very personal vision of the Pembrokeshire landscape, noting that ‘I felt as much a part of the earth as my features were part of me’. A new exhibition Spirit of Place: Sutherland and the Romantic Landscape at Oriel y Parc Gallery & Visitor Centre in St Davids, Pembrokeshire (16 March – 8 July 2013) includes work the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru, and also includes a loan of a major Sutherland oil painting from Tate, Black Landscape. Painted between 1939 and 1940, Black Landscape is one of the best examples of Sutherland's early work in Pembrokeshire.

West Wales will welcome one of the world’s most renowned textile artists this year as not one, but two exhibitions of his extraordinary work are hosted here. Kaffe Fassett is an American born artist who has lived and worked in Britain for several decades. He is well-known for designing exquisite textiles that use colour in an explosive and dramatic fashion. He started with knitwear back in the 1960s, and by today he has worked with needlepoint, mosaics, rugmaking, quilts, and much more. For the first time, Kaffe Fassett will be exhibiting in Wales and it provides an unmissable opportunity to see not one, but two elements of his work. His quilts will take centre stage at The Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter from 9 March to 2 November whilst in the National Wool Museum in Drefach Felindre, his knitwear will be on display from 8 March until 2 November.

Spring brings three exciting new contemporary displays to National Musuem Cardiff from March. A new pop art exhibition Pop and Abstract features many important artists’ works from the modern art collection of Amgueddfa Cymru. There will also be a new photographic installation commission by artist Holly Davey and Tim Davies brings his 2011 Venice Biennale video installation to the museum.

The rugby vibe is alive and kicking at the National Waterfront Museum this weekend (Sunday 3 March) with WRU professionals and former Welsh international player, Steve Fenwick taking to the stage.

As part of celebrations surrounding Wales in Chongqing week 2013, a brand new exhibition on the history of Wales, Wales, Land of the Red Dragon, organized by Amgueddfa Cymru, opens at the China Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing, China on 4 March and will be on display until 30 June 2013.

The Mold Gold Cape will go on loan from the British Museum for public display in Wales this summer. In partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives, this will be the third time the cape will have been displayed in Cardiff and will go on to be shown in Wrexham, not far from where it was found. The Cape will be on display for free at both venues as part of the Spotlight Tours organised through the British Museum’s Partnership UK Scheme.
