Consultation on the Display of Art
Between February and May 2001, The National Museums and Galleries of Wales began an exercise which had been signalled in the Museum's Operational plan for 2000/2001:
"To carry out a consultation exercise on the future display of Fine and Applied Art with the aim of achieving greater visibility for works of (1) Welsh inspiration and (2) from the post 1945 period"
The first element of this consultation consisted of five meetings with a wide range of people. Three were with artists, curators, museum professionals and others involved in cultural matters. Two involved in archaeology and in the natural sciences.
Contributors were invited from a wide range of institutions in Britain and Ireland, and brought with them a wide range of examples of how similar issues had been addressed in these other countries. Those from the Welsh arts and heritage fields contributed a broad range of perspectives which have helped to establish the terms and parameters of the debate.
All meetings were introduced and chaired by David Clarke of DCA consultants. NMGW staff attended each meeting - primarily to listen to the debate and to make limited factual contributions.
A Public Debate on May 17th attended by over 140 people marked the end of the first stage meetings.
We are now broadening this first stage consultation process by making available the themes and issues which have emerged so that as many people as possible can respond.
This is a live and current process, and will develop over the coming months.
A full synopsis of the consultation process, including the proceedings of the Public Debate, is available from this website.
If you would like to contribute to the consultation process by putting forward your views on the issues surrounding the future display of fine and applied art at NMG please do so by e-mailing your contributions to michael.tooby@museumwales.ac.uk.
NMGW will then produce a second stage, in the autumn and winter this year, where our responses to the issues raised will be set out. You will have a second chance to respond at this stage, so please leave us your name and address so that you can be kept in touch.
