Planes, trains and automobiles Learning: National Waterfront Museum

Duration:

3 sessions throughout the day each lasting 60 minutes.

Capacity:

2 groups of up to 30 pupils in each.

Suitable for:

Reception to year 2.

Purpose:

The aim is to engage learners in sessions where hands-on activities and experiential learning are fundamental to the visit. Children will learn about how people travelled in the past; how things changed and what still the same is.

Character Actor Session:

During this facilitated session, children will meet Mr Trevithick, a character actor, who will tell them about his famous invention- the world’s first steam locomotive. Children will learn about the exciting story that took place in Merthyr Tydfil and about the difficulties Mr Trevithick had to overcome to get his machine moving. Opportunity for role play and dressing up for a few children is part of the presentation.

Transport Explorer Boxes:

During this teacher led session, the class will break into groups. Exploration of each box is led by an adult leader from the visiting school. Guidelines for adults are included in each box. Questions to ask, explanations and content information are provided.

Transport Trail:

During this teacher led session, older children can record information using a worksheet based around three modes of transport- planes, trains and automobiles.

Classes of younger children may prefer to use the time for observational drawing of the large transport objects. Pencils, paper and clip boards can be brought along on the visit or can be provided on request. Please ask at the reception desk.

  • Develop an understanding about how people travelled in the past; how things changed and what is still the same
  • Develop chronological awareness
  • Develop observational skills when looking closely at objects and exhibits
  • Develop language skills in asking and answering questions about objects and about the past
