Development at National Museum Cardiff - National Museum Cardiff
Essential building and redevelopment work is being carried out at National Museum Cardiff in 2010.
While some galleries will be closed and some services reduced during this period, the Museum remains open to the public.
Thanks to donations from the Welsh Assembly Government, Trusts, Foundations and individuals, major building and refurbishment work is underway to the west wing galleries. This important work will generate additional space dedicated to the display of modern and contemporary art.
In the meantime there is still plenty of opportunity to enjoy Art at the Museum with a number of new exhibtions throughout 2010. From 30 September the Centre Block Galleries reopen to the public with entirely new displays of French art ranging from mid 19th century salon paintings, and the art of the Realists to masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Other rooms trace the impact of Impressionism on British art and the development of Modernism from Cézanne to the Surrealists of the `1930s'.
Work on the final phase of the project, the refurbishment of the upper galleries in the West Wing for modern and contemporary art, completes in the summer 2011. We are also improving disabled access in our popular Natural History galleries as well as giving our learning spaces a much needed overhaul. The all-new Clore Discovery Centre (formerly Glanely) is now open.
The Museum remains open throughout the refurbishment with a range of fantastic free exhibitions, events and activities. Visitor donations help support our work of Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales – please give generously.
