Welsh pirates — Foundation Phase - Learning: National Waterfront Museum

Capacity:
3 groups of up to 30 pupils in each.
Suitable for:
Reception to year 2.
Purpose:
To learn about one of Wales' historical characters and notorious pirates- Bartholomew Roberts. Children will learn that Barti Ddu was one of the most successful, and unusual, pirates that ever sailed.
Character Actor Session:
During this facilitated session, children will meet a character actor, playing the Welsh pirate, Barti Ddu. Children will learn about the exciting stories of Welsh men who sailed the high seas in the golden age of piracy. Children will learn about some of the unusual features of Barti Ddu's character and code.
Treasure Trail:
During this teacher led session, the class will break into groups (each led by an adult). They will complete a trail about money, coins, and silver and gold objects from Wales contained in the Museum gallery cases.
Treasure Chest:
During this teacher led session, children will have opportunity to carry out a variety of pirate themed 'make and take' activities.
Intended outcomes:
- Develop observational skills when looking closely at objects and exhibits.
- Develop listening skills.
- Develop an understanding about how people lived in the past.
