The Museum's collection of fine and decorative art is cared for by three separate conservation studios dedicated to paper, easel paintings and applied art. There is also a framing workshop.
The studios carry out conservation and restoration treatments as well as preventive work. They also undertake the examination of artist and maker's materials and techniques.
Analytical techniques such as examination using ultraviolet light, infrared reflectography, x-radiography and microscopy are used to guide and inform treatments such as cleaning, consolidation, structural treatment and retouching of works of art.
The studios also draw on analytical resources in the museum beyond the Art Department.
The three studios work on a broad range of works dating from around 1500 to the present day.
Work in preparation for the opening of the National Museum of Art in July 2011 created exciting opportunities to examine and treat many of the important works in the collection.
