CAMPAIGN TRAIL: DAY 2 - 22/8/99
THE NEWS IN BRIEF
A very successful day! Mark Lodwick's trench has been opened up over the enclosure's outer wall, archaeology is showing up in the trench, and throughout it all the sun continues to shine!
"The team is having a well-earned tea break after the last part of a day of serious shovelling and wheelbarrowing. Mark Lodwick's trench is already taking shape, and we have already succeeded in both uncovering the top of the enclosure wall and relocating the portion of the burial which wasn't excavated last year (hit the site plan button at the top of the page for the location of this trench). Roger is at the moment removing the plough soil from Mark Lewis' trench in the other field (see site plan).
Finds are starting to come up - including an iron knife blade, and some lead 'line' weights - so Evan will soon be busy in the finds shed."

"The real work begins today!
The team arrived relatively happy and we spent the first few hours telling them what we found in previous years and setting out our hopes and aspirations for the next few weeks.
Around 10 o'clock Roger set to work machining off the top 30cm of soil from my trench - that's the depth of the plough soil in this field. By the time he was finished there were already a few large stones poking up through the surface. Then it was over to us to clear the rest of the spoil and tidy up the sides of the trench with mattocks, shovels and wheelbarrows.
By afternoon tea we could see the top of the defensive wall running diagonally across the trench. Part of it we had already excavated last year - this was covered by blue plastic - the other part was new to us. In the middle of the trench we found the plastic that we laid down over the skeleton from last year's excavations, whilst elsewhere in the trench other features were already beginning to show themselves - one containing animal bone.
Despite the hard work involved the results have made the day worthwhile and everyone seems encouraged - tomorrow we'll finish the cleaning up."
