The news in brief

More discoveries from the spring and the midden continues to overwhelm the team with finds.

Each day in the spring brings new discoveries. Today we dug several slit trenches to confirm that the upper kerb stones on the north side had slipped into the silts of the pool. The original pool edge lay about a metre behind them in the north-west corner. Waterlogged silts in this area have been found full of organic debris, including some wood and plant stems.

Work has continued identifying and excavating the series of shallow gullies, whose function - we presume - is to divert ground water away from features such as the oven. Today we reached the bottom of the midden deposits in one area and discovered a buried soil beneath.

Two more trenches have been started to look at the midden deposits - at the western side of the main Spring trench, and we'll be examining these over the next day or two. A section has also been started in the middle of the south side of the trench. Otherwise work has concentrated in the oven area to sort out the surrounding ditches and to look for signs of a structure.

Animal bone still flows in by the bucket full from the midden. With the start of the final week one can only hope for good drying weather so that all that has been and will be washed is ready for bagging up by Friday.
