The Collections

The department aims to collect, curate and interpret evidence of life in Wales from the earliest times to the industrial revolution. To date these collections consist of roughly a million artefacts divided into 5 subject areas.

• Early prehistory: c250,000 - c2,000BC

• Later prehistory: c2,000BC - AD43

• The Romans: cAD43 - AD400

• Medieval and later archaeology: cAD400 - 1800

• Numismatics: The study of coins and medals

• Conservation: The care of the collections
