THE STORY SO FAR - before the 2001 season
The Viking Age settlement at Llanbedrgoch came to light in 1994 when a lead weight was discovered on the site and brought to Amgueddfa Cymru for identification. The Museum's Curator of Medieval & Later Archaeology, Dr Mark Redknap, immediately recognized it as a rare Viking find. With other finds also turning up in the same area, Mark realised that Llanbedrgoch offered the chance to answer one of archaeology's most puzzling questions - did the Vikings settle in Wales?
That same summer Mark led a team of archaeologists to find out more — and they've been going back ever since!
THE 2001 EXCAVATION SEASON - our aims
This will be our final season of excavation on site, and we have a number of clear targets.
- We hope to be able to complete the excavation of the spring and the early medieval deposits which we discovered in the bottom of the pool.
- The oven found last year to the west of the spring appeared to have the sill for a wall close to it: we will be opening up a wider area to investigate whether this is another building.
- There are a number of anomalies on the 1994 geophysical survey which we hope to investigate, such as an apparent break in the ditch on the north side of the enclosure, which might be an entrance.
- We will be completing a geophysical survey of the south field, to confirm the alignment of the enclosure in this area.
