MICHEL, Georges (1763 - 1843)

Media: oil on canvas
Size: 57.2 x 79.7 cm
Acquired: 1982; Purchase
Accession Number: NMW A 2472
The grand cathedral of Meaux stands out from the flat countryside as it projects into a brooding sky. Michel was one of the earliest nineteenth-century French landscape artists to reject the neo-classical traditions of academic art and concentrate on natural atmospheric effects. He was inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch landscapes rather than Italianate sources and became an important precursor to the BarbizonSchool.
