Morisot was deeply influenced by Manet, whose brother Eugene she married in 1874. The same year, she exhibited in the first Impressionist Exhibition. In 1881 the critic Gustave Geffroy observed: 'No one represents Impressionism with more refined talent or with more authority than Morisot'. This scene was painted en plein air at Bougival, west of Paris, where the artist stayed during the summers of 1881 and 1882. The sitters are probably her daughter Julie, born in 1878, and her maid Paisie.
