Thomas Pardoe (1770-1823) was employed as a painter at the Cambrian Pottery, Swansea, from about 1795 to 1809. He then worked freelance in Bristol, before returning to Wales in the winter of 1820-1 where he decorated the remaining stock of porcelain at Nantgarw until his death. This picture, which is almost certainly a self-portrait, belongs to a tradition of portraits of collectors and artists which originated in sixteenth-century Italy.

It is a pleasure to view this portrait of a distant relative of mine. It is amazing it was given to the museum in 1959, especially considering Thomas Pardoe died in 1823! I really value his talent and especially the tiger jug. A simular one fetched over £20,000 just a few years ago in London at Christies.
What is amazing is that so many of the items of the time blew up in the kiln after all the time spend decorating them.
Strangly in addition the youngest of my 3 son(Cadogan), looks very like him, with a big moon face and blonde curls!
