In the Old Testament story, Hagar was a servant to Abraham and his wife Sarah. She conceived a child with Abraham. For this she was banished to the desert. This painting shows Hagar despairing over Ishmael, dying of thirst, when an angel appears and points to a spring of water. This painting was made for Cardinal Antonio Barberini, Sacchi’s principal patron and one of the greatest supporters of art at the time. Sacchi upheld the Classical tradition of Raphael against the newer Baroque style in Rome.
