Lady Eleanor Mutton is shown in mourning. Her plain dress and sober expression reflect her grief. She had recently been widowed for the second time, on the death of the wealthy Welsh judge Sir Peter Mutton in 1637. That same year her brother John Williams was imprisoned for revealing state secrets, though he later became Archbishop of York.
