Cromwell was an East Anglian squire and MP. Although he had no military experience, his leadership was crucial to the Parliamentarian victory in the Civil War, and he became a leading figure in the Republican Commonwealth Government. From 1653 he ruled as Lord Protector. Cromwell’s great-grandfather, Morgan Williams, was an innkeeper from Glamorgan who married into the family of Henry VIII’s minister, Thomas Cromwell.
