A Game of Bowls

ANGILLIS, Pieter (1685 - 1734)

A Game of Bowls

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 44.5 x 54.6 cm

Acquired: 1937; Gift; Rev. A.C. Dyer

Accession Number: NMW A 3709

Village scenes like this were popular with wealthy patrons, who enjoyed their rustic charm and found the sight of peasants enjoying simple pleasures humorous.  Bowling was often associated with drunkenness and gambling.  By contrasting a tavern with a church spire in the background, the artist seems to make a moral comment.  Angillis was a Flemish painter primarily active in London.
