This picture formed the centre of Sinnott's second one person show at Bernard Jacobson's Cork Street Gallery in 1987, which was based on Puccini's last opera 'Turandot'. The vengeful Princess Turandot sets three riddles to be solved by her suitors, who face death if they fail. The attempt by Prince Calaf to win her hand forms the core of the drama. Sinnott says of Turandot "It's more illustrative than I would expect a painting of mine to turn out now", explaining that during the early 1980s he was reacting against the Modernist emphasis on form over content. " A painting like Turandot had taken me quite a long way down the road from my own more modernist past when content was always secondary."
