Stranger VI
CHADWICK, Lynn (1914 - 2003)
Media: iron and cement
Size: 78.7 cm
Acquired: 1964; Gift; Gulbenkian Foundation
Accession Number: NMW A 2514
This winged figure has both human and bird-like characteristics. With its wings outstretched it suggests a sentinel or guarding figure. But is it protective or threatening? Chadwick made his sculptures by welding iron rods. For Stranger VI he added a cement compound to ‘fill out’ the linear armature. This sculpture is the original model from which five copies were cast in bronze.
