Born in Bangor, Brenda Chamberlain trained at the Royal Academy Schools. This portrait was painted when she and her husband John Petts were living at Llanllechid in North Wales. Both the assertive full-face pose and the juxtaposition of a female portrait with a misty landscape background derive from Renaissance paintings.
