Pembroke Coast
INNES, James Dickson (1887 - 1914)
Media: oil on panel
Size: 33.2 x 40.2 cm
Acquired: 1970; Purchase
Accession Number: NMW A 196
This landscape of about 1911 depicts the cliffs at Stackpole Quay looking towards Caldey Island in South Pembrokeshire. It reveals Innes's landscape style at its closest to that of Augustus John, at the time when the two artists often painted together.

Thank you for your enquiry about paintings by J.D. Innes. Currently Arenig by Innes is on display in The Power of the Land: The Welsh Landscape Gallery and we intend to return Pembroke Coast to display in the same gallery soon. Further works by Innes, including both Welsh and French landscapes, will go on display in the autumn (from 30 September) when our new displays of the nineteenth century French and early twentieth century British collections open. There are also 12 watercolours and drawings by J.D. Innes in the Museum collection, which can be viewed by appointment in the Prints & Drawings Study Room (telephone 029 2057 3232).

Why aren't these lovely paintings of Wales by Innes on public display? I have just listened to a programme on Radio 4, "Delirious Wilderness" about Innes, and they described him as the Welsh Kandinsky. I had never heard of him but now I've seen these pictures I hope one day to see them for real.
