The son of a celebrated miniaturist, Isabey worked principally as a painter and lithographer of seascapes and coastal views in Normandy and Brittany. He was influenced by Bonington, who was one of the first artists to paint en plein air, and was a friend of Delacroix. Boudin was one of his students. Isabey exhibited at the Salon from 1824 and received the Legion d'Honneur in 1832.
