In 1896 the main activities of the enterprise established by John Mathias were moved to Cardiff where a new firm, the grandly-titled ‘Cambrian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.’, was established. For some unknown reason, the company later began to name its ships after public school; the first of them was this steamer, the Etonian, built by Grays of West Hartlepool in 1901. Sold to Italian owners in 1913, she was torpedoed on 23 December 1917.
