The National Slate Museum at Llanberis vividly recreates the story of the Welsh slate industry - the industry that once 'roofed the world'. It's a tale of community and craftmanship, strikes and suffering: all the dramas of hard, working lives.
Set in the original Victorian quarry workshops, the Museum nestles at the foot of Elidir mountain, where the vast Dinorwig Quarry once employed over 3,000 men to drill and blast the slate.
...it is as though the quarrymen and engineers put down their tools and left the courtyard for home, just hours before...
General Visits: Available All Year
- Explore our terrace of quarry workers' houses, re-erected at the Museum and decorated to illustrate key historical periods.
- Meet quarry workers in action as they split and 'dress' the slate by hand; they're happy to discuss their work with you.
- Experience for yourself the smells and sounds of the foundry, the forge, the workshops and the machinery - still powered by Britain's largest working waterwheel.
