Families and Schools National Roman Legion Museum

Roman Schooling

Here at the National Roman Legion Museum we pride ourselves on our award winning Educational facilities and Family Fun area.

In the Pegasus Centre, located in the Roman Garden, educational groups can take part in role play sessions such a Roman Schooling, Masters and Slaves and Roman Medicine. This area is used for special events and is on view during the Romans in Residence.

The Capricorn Centre adjacent to the gallery is used for education groups and becomes a family fun area on weekends.

Here visitors can use our art cart, dressing up boxes, play with Roman board games and themed toys, or relax with a selection of books.

There are activities suitable for children of all ages. The wide range of half term and holiday events are also located in this part of the Museum building.

Our Reconstructed Barrack Room looks as if eight soldiers really live there and have just stepped out to work. It even smells of smoke.

Reconstructed Barrack room

Popular with visitors of all ages, it takes the life-long learning experience to new levels. As part of both educational and general visits, one can experience life as a Roman soldier.

Here “hands on” sessions allow visitors to handle replica artefacts and try on armour. Both the role play session and barrack room can be booked as part of an educational visit. The barrack room is available from 3pm during term time and all day during weekends and holidays.
