Oriel 1 St Fagans: National History Museum

Oriel 1

What makes us who we are? Our families, languages, where we were born or what we believe in?

Be it through Voices, Beliefs, Family and the Nation, in Oriel 1 you can see, touch and listen while discovering what it means to belong.

You can also enjoy works by some of Wales’s most exciting contemporary artists.

Our language is a fundamental part of our identity and sense of belonging. The Wall of Languages showcases 80 of the languages spoken in Wales today.

Explore the long history of the Welsh language – still spoken after 1500 years - and learn about its story of survival , from a Bible translation to the age of the mobile phone.

Discover the link between Welsh and Bengali or what the future holds for languages, through digital stories and displays.

Both the Christian traditions and Wales as a multi-faith nation are explored in Oriel 1, from the development of religions, popular, personal and traditional beliefs to folklore, charms and superstition.

See how families help create our identity and gain a better understanding of the social history of St Fagans’ numerous historic houses.

Explore interactive photo albums of the buildings and the people who lived there. Listen to an oral history of the buildings and the family life that inhabited them.

Children can try on replica Victorian clothes as well as take part in activities during school holidays and on weekends.

National symbols and traditions are at the heart of Oriel 1. Through explaining stereotypes and the origins of traditions we can learn how they fit into society today, and how Wales is constantly re-inventing itself.

Traditional, audio and video displays on the National Eisteddfod, sport, symbols, traditions and the Land of Song all shed light on what it means to feel like you belong in Wales.
