Romans and Britons

This event has finished. 1 & 2 Aug 2009, 10.30am - 4.30pm

This weekend the Celtic Village is brought alive by the men, women and children of re-enactment group The Vicus.

In the village, meet families still largely living the life of the late Iron Age.

Outside the palisade, the legionaries and auxiliaries of the Roman Army keep an eye out for trouble.

In first-century Britain, the only coins produced were fakes – could there be an illegal mint operating somewhere in the village? And will the Romans find out?

Learn about the food of the period, how clothes were made and watch a variety of craftspeople at work.

Can the Vicus’ talented young blacksmith make an iron object during the weekend, starting from the ore? How many pots will survive firing in the bonfire? Visit the village to find out!

In Cilewent field, learn how both British Warriors and Roman soldiers get dressed for battle and use their weapons, and thrill to simulated combat.

A Festival of British Archaeology event.
