Discover the medicinal and beauty treatments that can be made from the Roman Garden at the National Roman Legion Museum.
Our beautiful Roman garden holds the ingredients to make wonderful lotions and potions. The plants, flowers and herbs were used by the Romans to cure ills and used as beauty treatments.
Romans didn’t wash with soap, preferring instead to use olive oil to bathe. To wash their hair and clothes they used soapwort.
Rosemary was used to relieve aching joints when put in oil, but also as an energy drink when boiled in water.
Come and see some experimental archaeology when we try to recreate some of these ancient treatments. You can even take some home with you.
