'Hiraeth'

This event has finished. 130 Nov 2010 (Nb. Closed Sundays and Mondays October–March)

An exhibition of students work inspired by the theme ‘Hiraeth’ and the Museums collections.

Taking inspiration from the Museum - the building itself, the industrial textile machinery or the textile collection - students from South and West Wales colleges were invited to submit a piece of work for a curated exhibition at the Museum which explores the theme.

‘Hiraeth’ is a word without a direct English translation, but can be best described as a deep yearning and connection with Wales.

The Museum’s collection of Welsh textiles is highly evocative of our heritage and makes a rich source of inspiration for contemporary artists and designers.

Architecture, machinery, materials, colour, pattern and texture combine to define industrial and domestic traditions in different geographical regions thus representing a strong sense of place.

The collections can not only offer the scholar the chance to understand our ancestors, craft and technology, but also define a place in a more poetic and philosophical way.

Utilitarian objects such as shawls and blankets answer practical needs but also offer an opportunity to explore a proud celebration of pattern, colour and protection.

Come and see the results of their inspiration.
