Join us for a tour of some of the sites featured in John Piper's paintings in the current exhibition.
Minibuses will be provided to travel between sites, but participants must make their own way to Capel Curig and arrange their own accommodation.
Suitable outdoor clothing (walking boots, waterproofs etc.), packed lunch and a good level of fitness are required.
Timetable
9-9.30am
Meet at the Bryn Tyrch Inn, Capel Curig, Conwy, LL24 0EL, (01690) 720 223. Registration and coffee.
9.30-10am
Introduction from Melissa Munro, Derek Williams Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Dr Richard Bevins, Keeper of Geology at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales.
10.30am
Arrive by minibus at Cwm Idwal Nature Reserve car park (toilet facilities and small shop selling tea, coffee and snacks available).
10.30-11.30am
Walk up to Cwm Idwal and Devil’s Kitchen. (Moderately rough terrain. A good level of fitness necessary.) Talks on the locations, John Piper’s technique and working methods.
12pm
Lunch on site, weather permitting, or walk back to minibus for lunch.
1-1.15pm
Leave Cwm Idwal car park and arrive at Pentre farmhouse by minibus.
1.15-3pm
Talk about John Piper’s accommodation in Snowdonia. Walk to the Nant Ffrancon Pass, setting for the oil painting Rocky Valley North Wales. Talk on the geology of the area. Walk back to Cwm Idwal car park.
3.15-4.15pm
Arrive at Tryfan and walk up to Tryfan Bach. (Moderately rough terrain. A good level of fitness necessary.)
4.15-4.45pm
Rest and refreshment at facilities at Cwm Idwal car park.
5-5.45pm
Visit the ‘Ricks and Racks’ to the north of the A4086 past Capel Curig.
6pm
Finish at the Bryn Tyrch Inn, Capel Curig. Round-up of the day and the chance to ask the curators questions and join them for a drink.
