Ffarwel Gymru - Working Abroad

This event has finished. 9 Oct31 Dec 2012, 10am - 5pm (Nb. Closed Sundays and Mondays October–March)

In the 19th and 20th centuries, millions of people across the world moved to different countries looking for work.

This exhibition looks at the people who left Wales; it will be concentrating on industrial causes for their migration. People had different reasons for leaving Wales. Sometimes workers went abroad because their specialist skills, learnt in Wales, were in demand and could earn them higher wages.

Before the introduction of social security payments in the 1920s unemployment meant no wages. If anyone was out of work they had to go and look for a job and sometimes this meant going to another country.

You might like to think about if migration has affected your family. Have any of your ancestors left Wales, or made the journey the other way and come to this country? Would you move to another country for any reason?
