An examination of the career of William Reardon Smith, from his origins in the Devon village of Appledore to his death in Cardiff.

After more than twenty years of seafaring he settled in Cardiff where he established his own shipping line.

Although never an easy man to live with, in later life he became noted for his philanthropic activities.
