From Tip to Treasure

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Find out more about the life of Coity Tip, the former spoil heap for Big Pit, now an area rich with wildlife. Find out about species and habitats at the tip and pond, and go minibeast hunting or pond dipping. Outdoor clothing and wellies should be worn for this session.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Maggie Morgan

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Visit old Maggie in her home, and listen as she recounts tales of her childhood as a door-girl underground and of life in the nineteenth century. Maggie is happy to answer questions about living and working conditions in the early days of mining.

What was life like for the thousands of children in Victorian Britain who went out to work? Draw on a variety of sources of evidence to find oput more about the lives of working children, including objects from our collections.

Underground Tour

Big Pit National Coal Museum

A guided tour 90 metres underground with an ex-miner who recounts their personal experience of working underground. Key developments in the history of the coalfield are covered, to tell the story of how coal made Wales.

Take a walk around Coity Tip, the former spoil heap for Big Pit. Learn more about the life of the tip, and the plants and animals which can be found at this mini nature reserve.
