Appointment of 3 Trustees one of whom to be the Treasurer-Designate to Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales

The Welsh Government and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales are seeking to appoint a Treasurer and two Trustees.

The Museum is one of the premier cultural organisations of Wales and is undertaking an exciting programme of development. It is a Registered Charity and Welsh Government Sponsored Body with the objective under its Royal Charter of ‘the advancement of the education of the public’. It operates 7 individual Museums throughout Wales, as well as a National Collections Centre, and receives around 1.7 million visitors annually. The Museum has collections of national and international importance and undertakes extensive collections-based research. It has an active programme of partnership with local museums and galleries throughout Wales as well as of loans and exchanges with galleries elsewhere in the UK and internationally. In addition it has strong public programmes for visitors of all ages, including a participative programme for schools to provide children with rich learning opportunities.

The Welsh Government is looking to appoint 1 trustee to the Museum’s Board of Trustees. In addition, the Museum is looking to appoint 2 Trustees to the Board one of whom will eventually be the Treasurer when the current Treasurer retires in November 2014. Whether appointed by the Welsh Government or the Museum, the roles and responsibilities of all ordinary Trustees are identical. The Treasurer will have additional responsibilities as outlined below.

Trustees will be expected to have an interest in the wider work of the Museum. Experience of working at board level and an interest in the heritage and culture of Wales will be key, and one of the appointments will be expected to have specific experience of commerce and business. An understanding of the relationship between the Museum and the Welsh Government as well as the wider cultural sector, and the responsibilities of Trusteeship, is also important. One Trustee post will commence on 1 June 2014 and the other on 1 December 2014. The time commitment for the posts of Trustee is expected to be a minimum of 12 days per year.

In addition to the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer who is formally appointed by the Board of Trustees, will be the lead trustee on all financial issues of the Museum, working in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Corporate Resources. The Treasurer post will commence on 1 December 2014, however, they will be appointed as a trustee on the 1st June 2014 in order to familiarise themselves with the work of the Museum and its financial context and work alongside the existing Treasurer during that period. The time commitment of the Treasurer is anticipated to be at least 36 days per year.

The term of office for all Trustee posts and Treasurer is initially for 4 years.

The ability to speak Welsh is not essential for the posts but the successful candidates must be comfortable working in a bilingual environment and have a strong commitment to, and respect and understanding of, bilingualism and the Welsh language in the cultural sphere and the communities of Wales. The Museum has comprehensive programmes to assist in learning of the language.

Meetings of the Board, which are held in public with bilingual translation provided, are currently 4 times a year. Most are held in Cardiff, either at National Museum Cardiff or at St Fagans: National History Museum, with one meeting per year planned to be held outside Cardiff.

The Trustee activities will tend to be concentrated in the Cardiff area, but he/she will also travel to branches of the Museum across Wales, as well as to other museums and galleries with which there are partnership schemes, attending meetings and events as appropriate.

Trustees are currently not remunerated, but the revised Charter now includes the power to remunerate Trustees. However the Charity Commission have made clear that, while it will not object to this, any subsequent proposal to use the power to pay Trustees generally or individual Trustees will have to be justified to the Commission as being in the interests of the Charity. However travel and reasonable expenses may be claimed.
