When the First World War began in August 1914, the soldiers of Britain’s small professional army were quickly joined in battle by the weekend soldiers of the Territorial forces. Eventually, both were followed by the citizen soldiers of ‘Kitchener’s Army’. Socialist, radical and non-conformist, the miners of Wales were traditionally sceptical about appeals to patriotism; but like other men, many miners were soon swept away by the enthusiasm for the war.
