Front cover of the Picture Post, dated 21 September 1940.

COAL magazine, produced by the National Coal Board from May 1947. It later became COAL NEWS.

All issues of the magazine Glo are now available on Rhagor.

The style of Glo is based on the photojournalistic magazine Picture Post and compliments the excellent St Fagans publication Homefront, which commemorated Welsh life during the Second World War.

Glo is also similar in appearance to COAL, the National Coal Board's magazine, first published in 1947.

Glo can best be described as a 'people's history' magazine; people are asked to contribute their own views, images and experiences of a particular topic.

A selection of stories and images from the magazines are also available on Rhagor as individual articles, each linking to the relevant issue of Glo.

Issues published to date have been:

  1. 'Bevin Boys': Conscription into the mines during the Second World War
  2. 'NC-Bloody-B' The nationalization of the coal industry
  3. 'All Poles?' Foreign workers in the Welsh coal fields
  4. 'Strike!' The 1984/5 Miners' Strike
  5. Mineworkers
  6. North Wales: The Forgotten Coalfield?
  7. A Cog in the Wheel
  8. Big Pit

Issues are available to download below.

I know Paul on the back cover of the strike magazine he and my father were on strike at the same time.I remember my father saying he left the pit to work in the Rogerstone aluminium works but went back to the pit because of the comradeship which was very high and everyone had to work together as there lives were at risk working underground . Paul as i remember was a keen
fly angler he sold some trout to my mother.

I have recently been lent a hard copy of GLO2 about the Bevin Boys and was delighted to find a downloadable version. My father Dennis was a Bevin Boy at Gilfach Goch and to cut a long story short, by the power of the internet, I have just made contact with the daughter of the family with whom he lodged in 1944. I still have yet to meet her and her family but we already seem to be regular correspondents, including my 82 year old mother.

I will be returning Jackie's hard copy of GLO2 to her. I think she finds it as fascinating as I do and hop she hasn't missed it too much while I've been soaking it up.

Three very interesting magazines. I will be mentioning them in the new edition of 'My Ancestor was a Coalminer' (due 2009), but why no link directly from the Big Pit site? It was only by chance that I found them!
