The Gilbert Collection has been formed over the last thirty years in California by English-born real-estate developer Arthur Gilbert. The collection, numbering some 800 objects, is made up of three quite seperate groups of material, English and Continental silver, European gold snuff boxes and Italian mosaics. In each of these fields it is among the most distinguished in the world and its gift to the nation in 1996 was one of the most generous ever made in modern times. The exhibition which this book accompanies concentrates on just one part of the collection - silver and silver-gilt with major British provenances - but the book also offers a glimpse of some of the other treasures that will be on view in a new museum in Somerset House by the year 2000.
